Dear Sirs,

Here is my story, woven between the sound of the wind and the scent of the sea. My name is Valerio, and I am a 14-year-old boy who saw his world change when, due to my parents' work reasons, I had to leave my beloved Tuscany for Belgium.

All this happened just two years ago: at the age of 12, I had to leave my roots to follow in my parents' footsteps to Brussels. But there was something inside me, a burning flame that could not be extinguished even by the greatest distances: a passion for sailing, not just competitive sailing, but that sense of freedom that only the sea can give.

Since I was a child, I have breathed the salty sea air, I have felt the call of the waves inviting me to explore the world. Every summer, with my family, I spent wonderful days aboard our boat, where I truly felt at home.

Sailing has been more than just a passion for me; it has been a part of who I am, a reason to wake up in the morning with a smile on my face, ready to sail the seas.

One ordinary day, a classmate told me about the world of competitive sailing and invited me to try it out. I immediately knew that would be my chance to shine.

I started my adventure with a used boat from the pre-competition of the Circolo Velico di Castiglione della Pescaia and proved to be up to the challenges that awaited me. I faced regattas, climbed rankings, and achieved goals I never imagined I could reach.

But then, fate decided to test me once again.

The move to Brussels was a tough blow for me, a challenge I had to face alone in a foreign country, with a different language and completely new wind conditions to learn.

My first training session in Belgium was a blow to my spirit: Lake Gent was certainly not like the open sea I was used to sailing. The wind was weak and unpredictable, and my heart felt heavy facing such a big new challenge.

But fortune favors the bold, and thanks to my mother's perseverance, we found a guardian angel in Antwerp who introduced us to new opportunities: I joined the 8 Days a Week team, and Coach Pieter Van den Bossche became more than just a coach for me; he was a mentor, a friend, and a guide through the turbulent waters of my new life in Belgium.

With his help, I learned to sail with the wind in my face, to face the highest waves with courage and determination. And so, after many trials and tribulations, I earned my ticket to the 2024 World Championships in Argentina, a goal I had always dreamed of reaching.

This achievement represents for me the opportunity to test myself and demonstrate my talent on one of the most prestigious international stages of youth sailing.
