Description
I am 16 years old and currently ranked 6th in the UK for pole vault. I am fully committed to improving and competing at the highest level, but living on the Isle of Man creates significant barriers that athletes on the mainland do not face.
One of my biggest challenges is the lack of suitable equipment. There are no longer any poles on the island that match my ability or size, meaning I am forced to train on a 13’7” pole when, based on my progression, I should be using a 15’ pole. This limits both my performance and my ability to develop safely and consistently.
Training facilities are also a major issue. The Isle of Man has no indoor athletics facility, so during periods of bad weather I have no alternative place to train. The nearest indoor facility is overseas, requiring expensive travel. Because of the weather, I have been unable to pole vault for the last two months, causing a significant interruption to my training during a crucial stage of my development.
Despite these challenges, I have still managed to become one of the top-ranked athletes in my age group in the UK. With access to the correct equipment and better training opportunities, I believe I could continue to improve and compete at an even higher level.
